Afenyo-Markin Sues Sammy Gyamfi, Media Houses Over Alleged ‘Extortionist’ Claims

Accra, August 24, 2026 — Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Osahene Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has commenced legal proceedings against Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, and others over allegations he says have damaged his reputation.

The legal action follows a public dispute between the two prominent political figures over the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and GoldBod’s financial operations. 

Two separate suits filed

Mr Afenyo-Markin announced the legal action on the floor of Parliament on Monday, August 24, 2026.

According to him, one of the cases, Suit No. GT/1029/2026, has been filed at the Accra High Court against Samuel Adu Gyamfi, popularly known as Sammy Gyamfi, and Multimedia Group Limited.

A second case, Suit No. GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, has been filed at the Achimota Circuit Court against Eric Adjei and Peace FM. 

The lawsuits concern allegations of extortion made against the Minority Leader, which he says are defamatory.

Dispute over GoldBod

The legal battle is the latest development in an increasingly heated disagreement between Afenyo-Markin and Sammy Gyamfi over the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).

Afenyo-Markin has questioned the financial performance of the programme and demanded greater transparency concerning reported losses, transactions and GoldBod’s role in the programme.

Sammy Gyamfi has rejected the Minority Leader’s criticisms and, during the ensuing exchanges, allegedly described Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist.” Afenyo-Markin has rejected the allegation and maintains that the description is defamatory. 

Afenyo-Markin challenges accusers

Speaking in Parliament, Mr Afenyo-Markin said he had chosen to submit himself to the legal process rather than continue the dispute through political exchanges.

He also challenged anyone who had accused him of extortion to report the matter to the police, the Office of the Special Prosecutor or another appropriate investigative institution.

The Minority Leader said he was prepared to cooperate with any investigation in order to clear his name. 

GH¢15 million compensation sought

Reports on the High Court action indicate that Afenyo-Markin is seeking GH¢15 million in compensation, alongside damages for alleged libel.

He is also seeking a public retraction and apology and an injunction against the publication of the allegedly defamatory statements or substantially similar claims. The suit reportedly asks that any retraction and apology receive comparable prominence to the original publication. 

These claims are allegations contained in the plaintiff’s court documents and have not yet been determined by the court. The defendants will have an opportunity to respond and present any legal or factual defences available to them.

From political dispute to courtroom

The development marks a significant escalation in the public disagreement between Afenyo-Markin and the GoldBod CEO.

What began as a political and policy dispute over GoldBod and the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme has now entered the judicial arena, where the courts will be expected to determine whether the statements complained of were defamatory and whether the plaintiff is entitled to the remedies he is seeking.

For now, no court has established that Sammy Gyamfi or any of the other defendants committed defamation. The matter remains before the courts.
