Minority MPs Storm Parliament Chambers in Protest Over Kpandai Seat Vacancy
Accra, Ghana — December 9, 2025: The House erupted into chaos today as Minority Members of Parliament disrupted proceedings to demand the withdrawal of the letter notifying the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) of a vacancy in the Kpandai Constituency. The protest was in response to the declaration that the seat had become vacant following a recent court annulment of the 2024 parliamentary election results.
Some of the MPs, dressed in black, held up signs saying “THE JUDICIARY IS IN JOHN MAHAMA’S POCKET,” showing glaring dissent against what they describe as a politically-motivated and unconstitutional move.
The official letter from Parliament’s Clerk, dated December 4, 2025, informed the EC of the vacancy as required under Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, citing the High Court’s order for a re-run.
But the Minority led by Chief Whip Frank Annoh‑Dompreh rejected the move as premature and unlawful, especially since an appeal and a stay of execution have been filed at the Court of Appeal. He demanded the withdrawal of the letter, warning that a by-election under the current circumstances would undermine the will of Kpandai’s electorate.
The protest led to a temporary suspension of Parliament’s business as MPs chanted slogans and booed at the Clerk attempting to restore order.
With political tensions rising, the fate of the Kpandai seat remains uncertain and the standoff may escalate into legal and constitutional battles in the days ahead.
